Client & Designer: Tom Dixon
Sponsor: IKEA
Event: RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019
Description:
I was contracted by Tom Dixon to project manage the build of their garden for the 2019 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, by far my biggest project management role to date with a global brand as a sponsor and a Very Large budget.
As you can imagine, it was a complex build – the garden consisted of a base layer showcasing crops grown in an artificially-created laboratory environment, and an upper level which was a landscape of edible, herbal and medicinal plants. I worked with the contractor, planting team, fabricator, nurseries and specialist suppliers who made everything from LED lighting to hydroponics units, endeavouring to make everything come together at the right time and in exactly the right place.
Really, project management comes down to nagging some people and telling others what to do. These people switch around at various stages of the project, depending on how well they respond to your cajoling. In order to do this successfully I find you need a steady supply of tea and biscuits, and not be below grovelling, which I am not.
These photos are not mine – they are from the RHS, and the visual is the official one from Tom Dixon (again, not mine)
